Potato Gleaning in the

San Luis Valley

WHEN: Saturday 20, 2025

WHERE: Alamosa, CO

WHO: All interested people are welcome for this La Puente event. Students can acquire 12 hours community service hours. Most gleaners will drive to Alamosa Friday afternoon/evening September 19th and stay overnight. There are several motel options, but we have found Super 8 to be the least expensive. Make your own reservations. Saturday morning we meet at the food bank and caravan to a potato field in the San Luis Valley. Those not wanting to go into the fields, there will be work at the shelter or food bank where there is work to be done. We pick up potatoes on the ground left behind by the machines. It takes a couple hours to fill the La Puente van plus some bags for our local food banks. After weighing the potatoes back at the food bank we are free for lunch at La Puent’s Milagros Coffee House or some great Mexican restaurants in town. You are free then to return home or take in two great sites in the Valley:

1. Great Sand Dunes National Park east of Alamosa, and

2. Stations of the Cross in San Luis, CO, east and south of Alamosa. Miniatures of Huberto Maestas’ sculptures are in the Vatican Museum.

Thank you to the farmers of the San Luis Valley.

Leviticus 19:9 When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not be so thorough that you reap the field to its very edge, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest.
